Work through the task
Convert a storage amount using exact decimal and binary unit definitions.
- Select both units, paying attention to bits versus bytes and decimal versus binary prefixes.
- Enter a nonnegative amount, then run. Swap invalidates the old output and requires an explicit rerun.
- Review the result before copying or downloading. Editing an input invalidates the previous result; keep an original if the transformation matters.
Example to check
1 KiB → 1.024 KB. 1 KB → 1,000 bytes.
Limits and output behavior
Exact fraction arithmetic for supported decimal/binary bit and byte units. Maximum 1,024 input characters and an absolute decimal exponent of 1,000. Negative amounts, grouped numbers such as 1,000 and unsupported syntax are rejected. Outputs can be long; no automatic source replacement is performed.
Troubleshooting
Use an ungrouped nonnegative decimal/scientific amount. Check decimal versus binary prefixes and bit/byte case; negative values, unsupported syntax and extreme exponents are rejected.
Questions
Why are KB and KiB different?
Decimal KB uses 1,000 bytes; binary KiB uses 1,024 bytes. This exact converter retains the selected unit definition as a rational value.
